About Castle Ward
Castle Community Office
is located
in Castle Ward – a densely populated urban area in the heart of Scarborough
which includes the ‘Old Town’, castle and harbour/seafront and stretches out
to Westwood.
Although much of Castle Ward is located in a very attractive environment, it
is considered to be an area of social deprivation due to levels of
unemployment, crime, drug misuse, poor health and housing issues.
Scarborough has a significant population of long-term unemployed people who
have moved to the area to find cheap accommodation in the wake of a steadily
declining tourist industry.
There is much involvement from agencies working in Castle Ward to support
people in need and to co-ordinate regeneration activities that will build a
sense of pride in the community. In 1995 funding from Europe enabled the
establishment of the Castle Pride Initiative, involving a number of groups,
including Castle Ward Tenants and Residents Association, local traders
groups and an anti-theft group, in the formulation of projects to promote
regeneration activities. In spring 2005 Castle Community Office was
established as one such project.
There is much happening in Castle Ward, with new projects being established
to tackle recycling, upgrading the harbour and other environmental
improvements. Castle Ward has twice won an outstanding award in the Britain
in Bloom Neighbourhood Awards (2006 and 2007) and is keen to maintain and
exceed this high standard. In the future there will be many more
opportunities to develop projects that will tackle sustainability issues so
that Castle Ward can continue to prosper and hopefully in time loose its
negative label of social deprivation.
